The American artists' collective Negativland originated in 1980. In conjunction with their own material, they use quotations from mass culture thus creating works of art, books, recordings, CDs, films and live performances that change the original messages of the rearranged materials. They refer to this working method as "cultural jamming" (a term they coined themselves) or "cultural archaeology".
